Rupert White and Jacob Van der Beugel

Salt Gallery, Hayle 12th May 2006

In the main space at the Salt Gallery, Rupert White showed 11 paintings, which included some of the most minimal seen in a commercial gallery in Cornwall for some time. His grey grid paintings, whilst clearly influenced by Agnes Martin, are distinctive in that the underpainting is loose and gestural, and so more obviously evocative of weather conditions and the sea. He also showed a video of a huge weather balloon bouncing on a local beach that looked, simultaneously, both familiar and uncanny.
