Hello everyone.

I have something I want to encase in glass (or plastic)... I'm thinking in a block, but might consider doing it like a paperweight...

I've looked online but can't find anyone who can do this for me... mainly because I don't know what to call it.

Normally you encase flowers and bugs etc... but i'm going to encase a clay sculpture...

Can anyone help, or point me in the right direction?

the plasticky stuff is called clear casting acrylic. Ive used it before and its a type of high-quality fibre glass resin. You can get hold of it fairly easy and its not too expensive.

Cos youre in London try Tirantis - theyve got a website

re glass dont know but Sara Bowler was a glass maker in a former life. She was in Wheal Art Weekend and is a supporter of the site - though dont know when she last came to the forum....

Thanks for the info - I think glass is my number one unless it's too pricey - so if Sara's about!?!

That would be great...

Swiftie,
The problem with encapsulating clay in glass is shrinkage - would you be using a ceramic artefact or raw (unfired) clay, say in a slump mould?
Davina Kirkpatrick could offer you technical advise as glass is her business + she is unusually helpful. davina@davinak.co.uk
Let me know how you get on.

Ah, never even thought of that.

i've used air-drying clay... bought it in a pack in an artshop... forget the name, but it was white.

I'll email you a jpeg of it later today...

I made it about 3 month ago... i'm pretty sure all the water is out now... as it takes the shape of a heavy mass  about 10cm widewith a mouth.

Thanks for the info for Davina.

mucho gratefulo
